Botox and Fillers Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox Cosmetic is the first and only FDA-approved prescription product to improve the appearance of wrinkles temporarily.
Wrinkles are as natural as aging. In addition to biological changes to cells, wrinkles occur in response to certain habits. Over time, folds caused by muscle contraction in the face create permanent lines. Activities like frowning, squinting, concentrating, and even smiling cause wrinkles to appear around the forehead, eyes, and lips.
What is Juvederm® XC?
The Juvederm gel and filler are the first and only FDA-approved products of their kind.
As a natural part of aging, cheeks can lose their volume and skin may become a victim to gravity and time. Dr. Cotter uses Juvederm Voluma XC to instantly add volume to the cheek to correct age-related volume loss in adults over the age of 21. She also uses it to instantly smooth moderate to severe wrinkles around the mouth and nose. This gel can provide contour and subtle lift for up to two years with optimal treatment.
What does Botox do?
Botox works by targeting the muscles beneath the surface of the skin to reduce their tugging on the skin above. When the muscles below and relaxed, wrinkles in the skin diminish. The result is an improvement in the appearance of moderate to severe wrinkles, frown lines, and crow's feet.
How does Botox differ from other dermal fillers?
Botox and dermal fillers are injectable treatment options that help to eliminate or dramatically reduce the signs of aging on the face and neck. Botox is unlike other dermal fillers because it doesn't stimulate the growth of collagen or elastin. Instead, it paralyzes the muscles, allowing them to relax completely.
As the muscles become laxer, they appear fuller. That causes the skin to become taut, giving the impression that the tissues are toned. Because Botox doesn't improve the structure of the tissues, the results don't last as long as other dermal fillers and tend to disappear at a much faster rate.
