Endometrial ablation is a permanent option for the treatment of heavy menstruation for women who no longer wish to become pregnant.
About
This treatment is a non-hormonal procedure that helps reduce the menstrual flow. It is minimally invasive and a one-time procedure that does not require any additional treatments. This procedure is done as an outpatient procedure in the surgery center.
Who
Women who do not wish to have any children but want to keep their uterus. Those who soak through a tampon or pad every hour for several hours through the day. Women whose everyday lives and activities are affected by heavy periods.
How
Dr. Cotter uses a method called hydrothermal ablation, in which a heated liquid gets inserted and pumped around the uterus through a catheter and destroys the lining.
Results
Lighter or absent menstruation in 85% of women.
- Insertion: A small, soft, flexible balloon attached to a thin catheter is passed through the vagina and cervix where it is placed gently in the cervix.
- Treatment & Monitoring: The balloon is filled with fluid until it is the size and shape of the uterus. The fluid is then headed and circulated for 8 minutes.
- Deflation & Removal: The fluid is withdrawn from the balloon and the balloon is removed. Nothing remains in the uterus. Then the treated lining with slough off like a period.
